Brass Instrument Tuition

Brass Instrument Tuition

Have you ever fancied playing a brass instrument yourself? It's never to late to start!

I offer one-to-one lessons to children and adults from complete beginner to advanced level.

Whether you want to learn for enjoyment, aim to join a particular music ensemble, or aspire to progress through the grades, I can help you build a solid technical foundation on your instrument, while having lots of fun at the same time.

Lessons are tailored to you, and include:

  • How to make scales fun!

  • First steps in improvisation

  • Playing music by ear

  • Lots of backing tracks to play along with

  • And lots more to make your lessons as enjoyable and worthwhile as possible

I primarily teach online through Zoom so lessons are available wherever you are in the world, but I live in South London and am happy to travel locally to teach home visit lessons.

Music Theory Tuition

In order to take ABRSM's Grade 6, 7 or 8 exams on your instrument, you must first have taken and passed ABRSM's Grade 5 Theory of Music exam.

ABRSM's Theory of Music exams challenge you to study "the building blocks of music, starting with the basics of rhythm and notes, and going on to cover harmony and counterpoint, composition, and a broad knowledge of western music, including composers and their works, structure, style and peroid".

Whatever your current knowledge of music theory, I offer one-to-one lessons to children and adults, either to enable you to get that Grade 5 theory certificate so that you can get on with more music making, or to study the wonderful world of music theory from the first lesson right up until the Grade 8 exam.

For those aiming to take the Grade 5 theory exam, I teach using my own books that I have written, and these are provided for free to my Grade 5 theory students (worth £42), so you only need to pay for lessons and the exam (click here for exam prices).

I primarily teach online through Zoom so lessons are available wherever you are in the world, but I live in South London and am happy to travel locally to teach home visit lessons.

Music Notation Software Tuition

Many musicians find it useful to use music notation software at some point in their lives, whether for composition, arranging, transposing music that they want to play, or writing out music to hear how it should sound. Two of the main programmes for this are Sibelius and Dorico.

I am very experienced with using both of these programmes, and can teach you the basics of how to get started with these programmes, all the way up to learning all of the keyboard shortcuts to become a power-user. I tailor lessons to the features that you find most useful to you, whether that's composition tools, arranging features or getting a great playback sound to make backing tracks or composition demos.

Testimonials

Matthew is a delightful tutor - enthusiastic and knowledgeable -who seems to be a natural teacher. Matthew patiently and thoughtfully tailors my lessons so that they match my needs and interests. He somehow achieves a balance of humour and firm discipline and has helped me – a novice brass player – to achieve exam success.
Even more important for me, Matthew’s own infectious love of his craft has encouraged and nurtured in me a sense of fun and enjoyment in playing my instrument.
